For Me to Live is Christ: The Life of Edward J. Young
For Me to Live is Christ: The Life of Edward J. Young
Davis A. Young, For Me to Live is Christ: The Life of Edward J. Young, $10
When Edward J. Young died suddenly on February 14, 1968, it marked the shocking and seemingly premature end of a life of faithful service as Professor of Old Testament at Westminster Theological Seminary and minister in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. It also served as the beginning of a nearly 50-year dream of his son, Davis A. Young, to write a biography of his father.

In this book Davis Young has composed a unique window on the remarkable life of his father. We read of his brilliant scholarship in defense of the Bible and the Reformed faith, and his remarkable ability to grasp and teach languages.

Davis also writes extensively about his father’s devotion to the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. He served long tenures on Christian Education and the special committee that produced the original Trinity Hymnal. Faithful in his vocation as a minister of the gospel, he found time for writing devotional studies, working with young people, and humble enough, his son notes, even to car pool students to the Christian school.

For a Testimony
For a Testimony
The OPC, by the grace of God, stands out as a remarkable chapter in the chronicle of church history. She is a statement against the insidious drift of mainline Protestantism, a challenge to an often misdirected and theologically weak evangelicalism, and a clear rejoinder to fundamentalism. She has been a positive, although not always consistent, testimony for Presbyterianism in the orthodox Calvinistic sense.

The authors of this book understand these things and are especially well-suited to write a history of the OPC. They know the church—John Muether because he was raised in it, and has loved and studied it; Darryl Hart because he chose it after a long journey through seminary and graduate school that included the detailed investigation of J. Gresham Machen's life and OPC beginnings. Here is sound assessment—to be sure, not without evaluation and criticism, as in all historical writing, but a valuable reading of the OPC's story meant for the church's edification, the communication of the truth, and the glory of the triune God of the Bible.

J. Gresham Machen: A Biographical Memoir
J. Gresham Machen: A Biographical Memoir
Dr. Stonehouse's biography is a perceptive and illuminating account which reveals in Machen, warmly and personally, both the man and the scholar; and, because of Machen's weighty influence over the ecclesiastical world of his time, it is an intimate history of the struggles of early twentieth century American Calvinism.

Ned B. Stonehouse (1902-1962) was a minister in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church and Professor of New Testament at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia for 33 years, from its founding in 1929 until his death. After studying under Machen at Princeton, he was Machen's intimate friend and associate for more than seven years, and later was his successor.
